The Marjaree Mason Center was founded by the YWCA, in 1979, after the death of Marjaree Mason. For the past thirty-five years, the Center has operated the only domestic violence shelter in Fresno County. In 1996 the Center became an independent non-profit. With the support of the community and strong leadership, the Center has become one the largest domestic violence agencies in California, providing a vital community service for those who are impacted by domestic violence in Fresno County and beyond.
October 11, 2018 is the Center’s 35th Annual Top Ten Professional Women and Leading Business Awards ceremony. This prestigious awards ceremony honoring local professionals, will bring almost 1,000 attendees together with the goal of honoring these outstanding individuals in our community while also raising awareness for domestic violence. This event pays tribute to ten women who have served as role models and given back to their communities, all while making strides in their professions. One business is also honored as the Leading Business of the Year for its support of women and women's issues.
Denise Brown will be the keynote speaker for this event. Denise is the eldest sister of Nicole Brown Simpson and has been speaking to communities and audiences nationwide about domestic violence since Nicole’s murder in 1994.
As part of her commitment, Ms. Brown has worked to help pass a variety of legislative solutions for domestic violence. One of her most important projects was to lobby on behalf of the Violence Against Women Act. Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania contacted Ms. Brown and asked for her assistance on a portion of the bill that was being stalled in committee in the U.S. Senate.
With a potential slashing of its federal allocation to domestic violence services, Denise Brown testified to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee for increased funding for the Violence Against Women Act. After her testimony, that portion of the bill’s funding was increased from eighteen million to thirty-two million dollars. U.S. Senators Biden and Hatch have cited Denise Brown as “having done more for the issue of domestic violence than any other individual.”
Denise Brown has made a life-long commitment to educate the public as well as improve the quality of living for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. She is determined to banish the darkness and end the silence.
